Hello! You are receiving this email either because you filled out an interest form for a potential Altadena Tenants Union or because you have signed up to receive our emails (or because you’re one of our neighbors and we know you personally) – thank you!
There has been a flood of information and resources to make sense of over these past few tragic weeks, so we will try to keep this short and sweet.
We are forming a tenants union for Altadena because we have lived here, we still live here, and we will live here in the future. We got started in the wake of the fires as it became clear that our best shot at getting folks help was by working together. Right now, many of us have lost our homes, others have been forced out due to unsafe conditions, and, on top of all that, we’ve been made to feel that we – as renters – don’t exist or that our concerns are not valid. Tenants unions exist because it is never easy to be a renter, and in extreme circumstances like ours, that is especially true.
We have three immediate goals as a tenants union:
Make sure we know our rights. Understanding what rights we have as tenants, and understanding what landlords cannot do to us, even in these extreme circumstances, is essential (and can be hard to figure out). The Pasadena Tenants Union has created this Tenants’ Guide with helpful information for renters in both Pasadena and Altadena. Neighborhood Legal Services of LA is also hosting regular tenant rights clinics – you can register for a session here or visit them at the Disaster Recovery Center on Woodbury if you need free legal assistance. We know that knowing your rights is not the same as being able to get your landlord to respect them, but it is a start. If you need specific help for your situation or aren’t sure what to do, email us back and we will do our best to at least identify next steps and resources along with you.
Build community. Many of us may never have really known our neighbors who lived next door, beyond saying hello on the street or in the hallway. Now, those hallways may no longer be there, and many of us feel isolated. The media coverage of the fires as well has added to this isolation, not hearing many stories of renters or acknowledgement of the many renters in Altadena. Furthermore, Altadena’s legal status as an unincorporated area has increased the sensation of isolation, not knowing what protections may apply to you. Our goal is to bring tenants together. We all share the same story, and whether your home is gone or survived, all of us are struggling.
Make sure our voices are heard. We want local officials, especially Supervisor Barger’s office, to know that we exist and that we are struggling. We have been collecting questions, stories, and frustrations from tenants to share with Supervisor Barger and her team. This evidence can help us advocate for protections with issues such as habitability determination, tenant advocacy, and ensuring a future for renters in Altadena.
As we get up and running (all of us are volunteers who have lost our homes too and/or are displaced!), we will begin sending tenant resources and action alerts for ways we can collectively advocate to our local officials.
In the meantime, if you are an Altadena renter, we want to know how you’re doing. We have created this Google form where you can input as much or as little information as you are comfortable sharing about your story and what you’ve been facing.

You can find us at our website and on the Renters channel on an Altadena community Discord server (organized by local Altadena folks). We are tired and grieving with you, and we hope to make sense of a way forward. This is our community and we belong here. You are our neighbors, and we care about you.

Ha habido una avalancha de información y recursos para darle sentido durante estas últimas trágicas semanas, por lo que intentaremos que esto sea breve y conciso. Estamos formando un sindicato de inquilinos para Altadena porque hemos vivido aquí, todavía vivimos aquí y viviremos aquí en el futuro.
